Every Scripture about Hell
and the Worlds Under the Earth
In the Bible, there are more than 100 verses about the five worlds under the earth: hell, the pit, tartarus, the lake of fire, and paradise.
The vast majority of the scriptures are about hell and the pit. A full summary of these five worlds are on pages 128-136.
Hell – where lost, unsaved souls go after death
The Pit – the home of demons
Tartarus – where fallen angels are kept in chains
Lake of fire – where hell will be for eternity
Paradise – where pre-resurrection saints went
But if the Lord creates a new thing, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them up with all that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the pit, then you will understand that these men have rejected the Lord.
So they and all those with them went down alive into the pit; the earth closed over them, and they perished from among the assembly.
For a fire is kindled in My anger, and shall burn to the lowest hell; It shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.
He made a pit and dug it out, and has fallen into the ditch which he made.
The nations have sunk down in the pit which they made; In the net which they hid, their own foot is caught.
The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.
For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.
The sorrows of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me.
To You I will cry, O Lord my Rock: Do not be silent to me, Lest, if You are silent to me, I become like those who go down to the pit.
O Lord, You brought my soul up from the grave; You have kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.
“What profit is there in my blood, When I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise You? Will it declare Your truth?
For without cause they have hidden their net for me in a pit, which they have dug without cause for my life.
He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, And established my steps.
That he should continue to live eternally, and not see the Pit
Let death seize them; Let them go down alive into hell, for wickedness is in their dwellings and among them.
But You, O God, shall bring them down to the pit of destruction; Bloodthirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; But I will trust in You.
They have prepared a net for my steps; My soul is bowed down; They have dug a pit before me; Into the midst of it they themselves have fallen.
Let not the floodwater overflow me, nor let the deep swallow me up; And let not the pit shut its mouth on me.
For great is Your mercy toward me, And You have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.
I am counted with those who go down to the pit; I am like a man who has no strength,
You have laid me in the lowest pit, In darkness, in the depths.
That You may give him rest from the days of adversity, Until the pit is dug for the wicked.
The pains of death surrounded me, And the pangs of Sheol laid hold of me; I found trouble and sorrow.
If I ascend into heaven, you are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, you are there.
Answer me speedily, O Lord; My spirit fails! Do not hide Your face from me, Lest I be like those who go down into the pit.
Surely by now he is hidden in some pit, or in some other place. And it will be, when some of them are overthrown at the first, that whoever hears it will say, ‘There is a slaughter among the people who follow Absalom.’
2 Samuel 17:9
And they took Absalom and cast him into a large pit in the woods, and laid a very large heap of stones over him. Then all Israel fled, everyone to his tent.
2 Samuel 18:17
The sorrows of Sheol surrounded me; the snares of death confronted me.
2 Samuel 22:6
Yet You will plunge me into the pit, and my own clothes will abhor me.
They are higher than heaven— what can you do? Deeper than Sheol— what can you know?
Will they go down to the gates of Sheol? Shall we have rest together in the dust?”
Sheol is naked before Him, And Destruction has no covering.
He keeps back his soul from the Pit, And his life from perishing by the sword.
Yes, his soul draws near the Pit, And his life to the executioners.
Then He is gracious to him, and says, ‘Deliver him from going down to the Pit; I have found a ransom’;
He will redeem his soul from going down to the Pit, And his life shall see the light.
To bring back his soul from the Pit, that he may be enlightened with the light of life.
Let us swallow them alive like Sheol, and whole, like those who go down to the Pit;
Her feet go down to death, her steps lay hold of hell.
Her house is the way to hell, descending to the chambers of death.
But he does not know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of hell.
Hell and Destruction are before the Lord; So how much more the hearts of the sons of men.
The way of life winds upward for the wise, that he may turn away from hell below.
The mouth of an immoral woman is a deep pit. He who is abhorred by the Lord will fall there.
You shall beat him with a rod, and deliver his soul from hell.
For a harlot is a deep pit, and a seductress is a narrow well.
Whoever digs a pit will fall into it, and he who rolls a stone will have it roll back on him.
Hell and Destruction are never full; So the eyes of man are never satisfied.
Whoever causes the upright to go astray in an evil way, He himself will fall into his own pit; But the blameless will inherit good.
He who digs a pit will fall into it, and whoever breaks through a wall will be bitten by a serpent.
Therefore Sheol has enlarged itself, and opened its mouth beyond measure; their glory and their multitude and their pomp, and he who is jubilant, shall descend into it.
Your pomp is brought down to Sheol, And the sound of your stringed instruments; The maggot is spread under you, and worms cover you.’
Hell from beneath is excited about you, To meet you at your coming; It stirs up the dead for you, All the chief ones of the earth; It has raised up from their thrones All the kings of the nations.
Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, To the lowest depths of the Pit.
But you are cast out of your grave like an abominable branch, Like the garment of those who are slain, Thrust through with a sword, Who go down to the stones of the pit, like a corpse trodden underfoot.
Fear and the pit and the snare Are upon you, O inhabitant of the earth.
And it shall be that he who flees from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit, and he who comes up from the midst of the pit shall be caught in the snare; For the windows from on high are open, And the foundations of the earth are shaken.
They will be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and will be shut up in the prison; After many days they will be punished.
Because you have said, “We have made a covenant with death, And with Sheol we are in agreement. When the overflowing scourge passes through, it will not come to us, For we have made lies our refuge, And under falsehood we have hidden ourselves.
Your covenant with death will be annulled, and your agreement with Sheol will not stand; When the overflowing scourge passes through, Then you will be trampled down by it.
And He shall break it like the breaking of the potter’s vessel, which is broken in pieces; He shall not spare. So there shall not be found among its fragments a shard to take fire from the hearth, Or to take water from the cistern.”
I said, “In the prime of my life I shall go to the gates of Sheol; I am deprived of the remainder of my years.”
Indeed it was for my own peace that I had great bitterness; But You have lovingly delivered my soul from the pit of corruption, For You have cast all my sins behind Your back.
For Sheol cannot thank You, Death cannot praise You; Those who go down to the pit cannot hope for Your truth.
You went to the king with ointment, and increased your perfumes; You sent your messengers far off, And even descended to Sheol.
“And they shall go forth and look upon the corpses of the men who have transgressed against Me. For their worm does not die, and their fire is not quenched. They shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.”
Though they dig into hell, From there My hand shall take them; Though they climb up to heaven, From there I will bring them down;
And he said: “I cried out to the Lord because of my affliction, And He answered me. “Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, And You heard my voice.”
[Woe to the Wicked ] Indeed, because he transgresses by wine, He is a proud man, And he does not stay at home. Because he enlarges his desire as hell, And he is like death, and cannot be satisfied, He gathers to himself all nations And heaps up for himself all peoples.
And he said, “Take them alive!” So they took them alive, and killed them at the well of Beth Eked, forty-two men; and he left none of them.
2 Kings 10:14
Benaiah was the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man from Kabzeel, who had done many deeds. He had killed two lion-like heroes of Moab. He also had gone down and killed a lion in the midst of a pit on a snowy day.
1 Chronicles 11:22
Shall evil be repaid for good? For they have dug a pit for my life. Remember that I stood before You
To speak good for them, to turn away Your wrath from them.
Let a cry be heard from their houses, when You bring a troop suddenly upon them; For they have dug a pit to take me, and hidden snares for my feet.
Thus says the Lord God: ‘In the day when it went down to hell, I caused mourning. I covered the deep because of it. I restrained its rivers, and the great waters were held back. I caused Lebanon to mourn for it, and all the trees of the field wilted because of it.
I made the nations shake at the sound of its fall, when I cast it down to hell together with those who descend into the Pit; and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, were comforted in the depths of the earth.
They also went down to hell with it, with those slain by the sword; and those who were its strong arm dwelt in its shadows among the nations.
The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of hell with those who help him: ‘They have gone down, they lie with the uncircumcised, slain by the sword.’
They do not lie with the mighty Who are fallen of the uncircumcised, who have gone down to hell with their weapons of war; They have laid their swords under their heads, but their iniquities will be on their bones, Because of the terror of the mighty in the land of the living.
But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire.
If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hades; for if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire.
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.
Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell?
Then He will also say to those on the left hand, 船epart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels . . .”
If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for your to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to be cast into hell, to go to hell, into the fire shall never be quenched – ‘where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.’
“O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?”
1 Corinthians 15:55
And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hades.
But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him!
And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
For You will not leave my soul in Hades, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.
He, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption.
And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.
For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment.
2 Peter 2:4
If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched
And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame, rather than having two feet, to be cast into hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched—
And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire—
And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.24 “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’
I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.
So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth.
Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which
he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.
Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.
The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works.
Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.
But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
